An amusing photo from Carolyn André for you this Monday - a Wild Turkey posing as a ballerina

Carolyn André caught a Wild Turkey en pointe - up on its toes. It looks like it's doing an impersonation of a ballerina. Carolyn had another thought for a title - "Dressed for Thanksgiving, high heels and all!" The two other Tom Turkeys don't seem to be at all impressed.

I hope this photo will bring a smile to you today!

Get yourself a wild turkey education box!:

Note that turkeys may destroy crops and native species. Some like to peck at cars (especially shiny clean cars), which will chip paint.
Great picture, though ...

Did you know there was a California Turkey? It's now extinct due to hunting by early settlers and possibly climate change.

The wild turkeys we have on the coast are non-natives. They are considered a game bird. But I've heard they aren't even good to eat!

According to wikipedia, the California turkey went extinct about 10,000 years ago when humans started showing up in the Americas. See also:

Attempts to introduce (or re-introduce) turkeys in CA began as early as 1877.

Turkeys are closely related to pheasant. Both are popular upland game birds because they're a challenge to hunt. Pheasants are fast, and you usually get one shot at them only. Turkeys are smart and know how to evade hunters. Both taste infinitely better when cooked up in a pressure cooker. But I still much prefer Costco rotisserie chicken. Turkeys and pheasants are more fun to photograph that eat.
